Kinyara Sugar: Scale, Quality & Energy

In 2006, Sarrai Group acquired a 70% stake in Kinyara Sugar Limited, which at that time produced 57,000 metric tons annually from 15,000 hectares of sugarcane. In 2011, the Group invested more than 45 million US dollars to expand the factory’s production capacity to 105,000 metric tons per year and increased the sugarcane cultivation area to 23,000 hectares.

Kinyara Sugar Limited is Uganda’s second-largest sugar producer, holding over 30% of the market share. It was recognized as one of East Africa’s Superbrands in 2008 and 2009. Kinyara Sugar is known for its high-quality sugar, certified by the Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS). The KSL sugar plant has a crushing capacity of 9,000 tons of cane per day (TCD).

The company generates electricity for its own use and also supplies power to the national grid. Electricity production has grown from 1.8 megawatts per year in 2006 to 14.5 megawatts annually today, with over 6 megawatts contributed to the national grid.

Kinyara Sugar Limited ranks among Uganda’s top ten taxpayers, having paid 19.9 million US dollars in taxes in 2011. The factory employs more than 6,000 people and supports around 30,000 individuals through their families and related businesses. Additionally, Kinyara Sugar has received the “People’s Choice Awards” for best sugar on multiple occasions, most recently in 2018.

Hoima Sugar: Integrated Growth & Community Impact

Hoima Sugar Ltd, situated in Kiziranfumbi, Hoima District, is a sugar manufacturing facility with a cane crushing capacity of 1,500 tons per day, which can be expanded to 4,000 tons per day. The core estate spans 10,000 hectares and includes its own cogeneration power plant with an installed capacity of 5 MW, expandable to 12 MW, as well as a distillery plant with a capacity of 20 kiloliters per day. With a total investment of $62 million, Hoima Sugar directly employs 2,600 workers, significantly contributing to the socio-economic development of the area.
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Hoima Sugar quickly adapted by producing much-needed hand sanitizer that meets industry standards and is accredited by the Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS). The sanitizer is sold under the brand name PROSAN and is available in both bulk quantities and smaller portable bottles suitable for field staff or general use.

Kiryandongo Sugar: Reliability Across the Value Chain

Kiryandongo Sugar Limited (KSL) is a limited liability Company which was commissioned in August 2021. The factory is located in Bweyale, Kiryandongo, Uganda. Kiryandongo Sugar is owned and operated by the conglomerate Sarrai group. KSL has an installed capacity of 4000 Tons per Day (TPD) at present with a state of the art facility with modern equipment. The company has over 20,000 acres of its own greenfield sugarcane plantation and over 25,000 acres of out growers.
KSL has a project of over 200 km of Road development.
Apart from the Sugar Mill, KSL has also set up an integrated ecofriendly
6 MW capacity Power project for decentralized generation of domestic surplus power, mainly from bagasse generated from sugarcane crushing
